26: Potioneers
E ileen wasnât sure which was worse, a troll in the forest at the dead of night when she could hardly make a single one of its features, or a troll in the town bright and early in the morning when she could make out every terrifying detail of the creature. It was probably best to reserve judgment.
The cut she had given the beast on its leg last night had healed and now looked like a scar from a long-ago injury. It made her feel like the knife in her left hand was rather useless. Still, she wasnât about to drop it. It was what she held in her right hand that gave her a small bit of comfort.
Late last night, she and Nerwenye had managed to mix up two or three potions that they hoped would help them fight the troll. One was ready; the others would have to wait in their pots a little longer. That didnât stop Eileen from feeling confident in her skills. Even one would give them an advantage.
âI told you to stay out of my forest!â the troll bellowed. âNow Iâm gonna smash you all!â
âNo one went into your forest!â Eileen shouted back.
She was fairly certain that was the case. Even though it had only been a few hours, she was quite sure that none of Lady Hatcherâs servants or any other residents of Redbrick would have returned to the trees, especially after what had happened to the poor soul whoâd wandered there yesterday. But that didnât matter to the troll.
The giant monster used its club to smash a front door and reached into the hole it had created. Eileen could hear screams coming from inside and imagined that it was grasping at whoever might be living there.
They had to act now if they were going to save the people in Redbrick from being pulverized.
She ran up to the beast and slashed her knife along its forearm. She knew it wouldnât do any permanent damage, but she hoped that it might make him drop his tree size weapon.
Treestomper roared in pain and sent a kick in Eileenâs direction. She managed to dodge most of it, but the side of its foot caught her and she went tumbling down the street.
Whether her action had been brave or stupid, she heard shouts from behind her as she went sprawling. Kyne, Milgard, and from the sound of it, Lillian had all sprung forward to take on the troll.
Eileen had managed to curl up around her precious glass vial and stood up slowly after checking that the glass had not cracked. She was sure they would have to deal a lot more damage to the beast before she could use it as a final blow.
For their part, her three companions were causing the troll a great deal of annoyance. Even though it swung its tree stump, Eileen could tell that the cut she had given it made it unable to wield the tree like it had before. It also wasnât quite as fast as it had been last night.
